  • Waves Again

Wednesday and Thursday of this week, we had "big waves" again.  This time they were generated by Hurricane Odile, the hurricane that flattened Cabo San Lucas earlier in the week.  I was at the beach both days, and took hundreds of photos.  I'll not comment much here, because the waves are mesmerizing by themselves.  On Wednesday, I was there just as the tide was coming in.  The waves were coming in in sets of three or four, then a short lull, then three or four more waves.  I was shooting to the southwest, which meant that I was shooting into the sun -- the darker shots were more directly into the sun than the others.

It was time to leave when the run out from a couple of waves came under the bench I was sitting on, and out into the parking lot!

On Thursday, I was at the beach when the tide was low -- the waves were a little smaller, and not running quite so far up the beach.  It was easier to shoot in directions other than straight into the sun, too.

Today was considerably cooler, with a marine layer overcast most of the day.  The waves were not spectacular, and hopefully our weather will move back to something more normal.  BUT -- there is another storm forming off Acapulco -- Polo.  If Polo becomes a hurricane, it could conceivably repeat the events of the past few days!

Fire update:  There have been 12 major fires in California this week.  Only two have destroyed houses -- in a little town called Weed, with 3,000 people, on the border with Oregon, 100 homes were lost a couple of days ago.  Too, east of Sacramento, in a forested area of the mountains between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, several homes were lost today.  This is the King Fire -- it jumped from 30,000 acres to 70,000 acres overnight Wednesday night, and is currently holding at about 75,000 acres.  Until today, it was burning in wilderness, and had not taken any homes -- they are telling us that this fire could burn for weeks, or even months, until we have some wet weather to help put it out.

  • Those waves look threatening and we have to take care .
Fire in California and flood in South France by rivers inflated by thunder rain.
    Weird summer
    move
    Michel

    • It has been a weird summer -- but it's been weird everywhere -- no place to move! The waves are threatening -- they must be respected!

  • I heard they arrested a guy for starting it? The waves are beautiful. Some unusual weather for parts of the desert. Maybe it will bloom. :-)

    • There have been 12 fires in the state this past week -- they have arrested somebody for starting the King Fire east of Sacramento -- one was started accidentally by somebody using sheet metal to keep rodents out of his yard (the sun reflected off the metal and overheated dry grass, which started the fire). The rest were lightning-caused! The weather has been very odd this year!

  • I felt like I should run a "wave sound track" while looking at your pictures. :)

  • I read about Weed in the newspaper. Fire is such an unpredictable thing. I hope the new storm doesn't cause any additional damage to the beaches! I'm assuming you are in a relatively safe area as far as the wildfires go but I'll be thinking of you...

    • The beach is already beginning to come back -- instead of a sharp drop off to sea-floor, there is a steep slope into the sea. Eventually that will becomeless steep, and all will be back to normal again! I am in a pretty urbanized area -- but there are wilderness areas close by (a couple of city blocks away), and I suppose a really bad wildfire could take out everything between there and here, but the authorities are pretty good at putting out spot fires quickly. They bring in helicopters, and scoop up water from a lake (reservoir) nearby! Of last week's 13 fires, only one was in Southern California -- the rest were at least 4-500 miles away.

  • Beautiful pictures. Sad about the fires.

    • Thanks! Yes, it is sad, although in some areas the fires will help the forests regenerate. It's just a bit scary, since everything in the State is so very dry in the drought we're having!

  • Been watching the news about the horrible fires and the plight of the people and properties in Cabo San Lucas. We were there just a few years ago, and it was so peaceful and perfect. I saw pictures of some of the ocean front hotels where we had stayed, and what a havoc!
The pictures of the waves and the colors of the water, truly mesmerizing.

    • It's been a couple of terrible weeks, what with fires, hurricanes, and floods! It will take Cabo San Lucas years to rebuild -- and I feel for the poor people in Phoenix and Tucson! The waves were really fascinating -- the colors, the power, the rebuilding from last week's waves, all were quite exciting! It's been cooler (20 degrees cooler) for the last couple of days -- what a welcome change!!!

  • the fires are so very worrisome, but the waves are just fabulous ~ so very beautiful ~ love the shots with the spray shooting off the waves ~

    • We are very fortunate so far that the fires have not consumed more of the state -- but we're still at the beginning of the fire season in a dry year! The waves have been incredibly beautiful this year -- I'm glad you enjoyed these. Yes, the backspray makes them even prettier!

  • So many wonderful shots of the waves! The ocean was really busy. peace always

    • The ocean has been angry in several places in the Pacific Ocean recently -- most notably, off southern Baja CA, and New Zealand. It's to be respected, but it's also very beautiful!

  • Just now looking at these, having been in Utah for three days and spending yesterday catching up. The photos from Wednesday have an eerie quality to them, given the directionality. It's quite thought-provoking, actually.

    • An interesting lesson in the effect of lighting! The waves bring many messages with them -- and they come a very long distance!

  • Wow, beautiful photo's. You are quite right... mesmerizing.
    This is the California coast?
It is cold here on the North Carolina coast. :-/

    • This is the Caliofrnia coast -- more specifically, Aliso Beach, southof Laguna Beach and north of Dana Point (SouthernCA between LA and San Diego). The waves came from southern Baja CA and from New Zealand. It's still warm here -- should get to 85 or so here today!

  • I love the blue / green colors of the waves. You must have filled your memory card(s). It must have been tricky shooting into the sun.

    • The beauty of digital is that you can take many, many shots! With action shots, I often set the camera on "multiples", and take successive shots of the action. It's sometimes hard to choose the best! Into the sun -- it darkens the image, but sometimes leads to wonderful effects!

  • You capture the power of those waves very well.

  • Hi, ryc: I'm just having to move from my current apartment to something more affordable... they are hitting me with a huge rent hike. I'm hoping to find a small house that I can rent from an owner and stop having to deal with these rental properties management companies that couldn't care less about anything but the top bosses getting their top pay.
Staying in the same area... in fact I'm hoping to find a place closer to the stores so I can get out more.
Just to a different house is no less taxing for me though, than moving far. :-( I'm still not knowing how to make it happen, but happen it must or I will deplete all my financial resources. :-/

  • No new post, Janet ?
Is your camera in a lack of inspiation ? :)
    Love
    Michel

    • Yes, Michel -- the camera has temporarily lost its muse! I'll try to post over the weekend -- after that, away for a week, then I should have more photos ~ ~ ~ Thanks for cheking on me :-) !

  • Hi Janet, just checking up on you. Hope all's well. Hugs.

    • Hi, Zakiah -- Thanks for checking up on me -- all is well, but it's a little difficult to be inspired after weeks of >90 degree weather! I've been catching up on life this week while it was a little cooler, but it will be hot again tomorrow through Tuesday! Next week away, then I should have more to write about! I hope you are doing well too!
