  • It rained last night

Last night about 9:00 there was a pounding rain for about 5 minutes -- and in the middle of the night it rained hard enough to wake me from a sound sleep.  All in all, the area had about 1/2 inch of rain.  It's the first winter storm of the season, and everybody is excited that it really rained for the first time since last March or so!  Today I took a few shots of clouds -- they were still in the area, but there wasn't much rain left in them.  The first two shots were from just outside my home, one in either direction.

I then went to the bluff above Dana Point Harbor to see what the sea looked like.

Moving down to the harbor, I found one lone Great Blue Heron sitting in a nest.  The trees seem to have been severely trimmed, whether by people or by nature, I'm not sure.  I do think it's probably a little early to see may birds there yet, but I fear there won't be as many this year.

This evening, as I was reviewing and editing the above shots, I noticed a very colorful sunset -- because the clouds had been pretty all day, I suspected that this would be  a pretty sunset.

For the first time this year, the temperature today was in the high 60's, and never broke 70!  Tomorrow it will be warmer, and by Monday it will be into the 80's again.

  • Our weather wizards forecast more rain for LA tomorrow. From the way you describe things, they may be off the mark.

    • There was at least one more shower last night. And the temperature has dropped to low 60's overnight. That will change during the week, but it's nice to see the moisture!

  • Also, apparently John has changed his mind about my getting six extra months of Xanga, so my site is now closed, per the Xanga team.

  • Congrats Janet! By any chance is that the left overs from Ana, it went all the way up to Washington bringing rain. It gave us 13" a couple of days.

    • Thanks, Steve -- lol! I don't know about leftovers from Ana -- they are calling this the first winter storm, meaning that it came from the north, so I suppose it could be possibly the same flow mixed into the jet stream. It's good to see the showers, although headlines say there's no foreseeable prospect of additional rain!

  • So glad you got rain. The sunset shots of the clouds are stunning.

    • Thanks, Doris -- the showers have been most welcome. I think the entire storm brought us less than an inch of rain, but every little bit helps at this point!

    • Oh -- and thank you for commenting on the sunset shots -- the color lasted a long time, and it was a beautiful sunset!

  • That's along time to go without rain! Glad you finally got some.

  • Beautiful harbor shot; the heron looks so lonely, lovely sunset! So thankful with you for the rain ~

    • Thanks, fwren! The showers have been most welcome -- we had another one or two overnight again, but now it's back to summer! The heron does look lonely -- I hope there will be more as we move into the fall/winter season.

  • Rain . I know a happy Janet! :)
    Love
    Michel

    • LOL -- you certainly do! We had a couple more showers last night, and the sky is again full of puffy clouds. The forecast is for summer temps again beginning tomorrow!

  • I'm so happy that you got some rain!! I love the photo of the rain over the ocean and the heron of course! Today was the first day of the time change so maybe I'll be able to see the sunset after work - at least for a couple weeks. Our sunsets have been obscured by rain clouds lately...

    • It was wonderful to see the rain!!! And there were more showers last night, too :-) ! I'm hoping the heron will soon be joined by others! I do hope you have an opportunity to see some sunsets before it gets too dark again!

  • So glad you got some rain. Praying you will get more soon.

    • It was a good start -- it will take at least 30" (double a normal rain year) to break the drought, and we had less than 1". Hopefully there will be more!

  • In my reply to Frank, I told him how happy I was that it rained there. I am glad that finally you all got some decent showers. The clouds look stunning and the sunset is awesome. It looks like perhaps there was some rain in the distance from above Dana Point harbor? beautiful pictures.

    • Half an inch of rain was a wonderful start, and there was a little more last night too! They say that we need 30" (double normal rainfall) this year to break the drought, so I hope there will be more soon. Yes, there were squalls over the sea when I was on the bluff above the harbor! I love seeing the squalls like that, although it was too bad to see all that water going straight to the sea! Maybe it will come on land next time.

  • Good Morning, Janet.

I loved those pink cloud photos a lot.

We had some pretty good rain as well--hoping for more.

    • It's nice to have had rain here -- but even more important to us is the rain you have, and the snow on mountains east of you! I, too, hope there is more coming, although our forecasts don't sound too hopeful!
