  • Catching Up

Since the beginning of January, there has been water oozing up from the middle of the road in front of my house.  Concerned that this might turn into either a geyser or a sink-hole, I called the Management Company -- with no response.  After letting them know how serious I thought this was, I called the water company myself.  Within 5 minutes a representative was on site determining that there was a leak between the main line in the middle of the road and a meter across the road.  He submitted a repair order.  About a week later, there were pictures on the road -- white for the water company, and yellow, blue and orange for other companies with utilities buried under the road.  Meantime, the oozing increased to two other patches, and water flowed down the gutters to storm drains.  On Monday, the 17th, there were signs telling us not to park for about 3 houses down the road on each side.   Nobody came that day, but 2 days later this is what I saw when I awoke:

    IMGP9994-002

    IMGP9996-001

As the day progressed, the workers cut two tidy holes in the asphalt, replaced two "service lines" of copper piping, filled the holes, and patched the asphalt with a preliminary patch.  They will be back in a couple of weeks to redo the patches and properly seal the road.I was impressed at how they cleaned up around their work and afterwards!

  • That hole looks like a very large pot hole that you could lose a car in.

    • Fortunately that 'pot hole' only materialized when the workers cut through the asphalt to get at the site of the repair! I was glad the leak was small and the road lasted till they got there!

  • Interesting repair.

    • I thought they'd have to build a trench under half the road -- two little holes worked well!

  • Thankful it was NOT a sink hole! yikes ~

    • It was interesting that the water just oozed up from the road -- then moved on and found another place to ooze up. I was glad, though, when the repair was done!

  • You would think that with the water issue there would have been more concern and a more prompt response. Glad to know the water co. was much more concerned! And they are a tidy group!!

    • I was horrified at the lack of response from the HOA Management! The water company knew the leak was very small, and I actually saw them working on another repair on the day the No Parking signs were out on our street -- I guess the area has been built up just long enough now for these small leaks to begin happening!

    • I was amazed at how efficient the 4 guys were! There was actually one of them washing down the mess the entire time they were working (including their paintings on the road!)

  • Good thing you followed up on it yourself!

    • Oh, the joys of living in an HOA. Because it was in the middle of the road, I didn't think I was taking any risk in calling, but I was not pleased at the complete lack of response while I sat here waiting for a geyser to erupt!!

  • HOA's do sometimes give use a really hard time. Our complex is very small - only 15 buildings/30 units. Glad it all got fixed in a timely manner and you didn't have to figure how to avoid a geyser shower.

    • It would have been very nasty if there had been a geyser or sinkhole -- the road was rebuilt only 2 or 3 years ago! Fortunately the water company was efficient in finding the leak and repaired it before it became a major issue. I'm glad it wasn't truly my responsibility to have the leak fixed, but the situation didn't convince me of the efficiency of the HOA for our 197 units!

  • I am so impressed that you took it upon yourself to get to the bottom of this mess. It would have been such a major problem. Too bad the management company ignored you. Eggs on their face!

    • Thanks, Zakiah! We rebuilt the roads only 2 or 3 years ago, and with the water situation, any leak demands attention! I'm concerned about the management company!

  • Glad this worked out well. With SoCal in such dire straits, regarding water, your HOA should be ashamed at not taking action more quickly.

    • I agree completely. I may attend the next meeting and bring it up in the member forum section! Fortunately, the repair belonged to the water company, as did the loss of water, but that could have been a very different situation.
