Nesting -- 3/7/2015
On Saturday afternoon, visiting the herons again, I saw only two birds, but one of them was engaged in some serious nest building. I watched it for a while, then noticed a second bird flying in to act as sentinel. This bird was trying very hard to pull a twig off that branch to take to the next tree.
That didn't work, so let's try from another angle.
Aha -- here it comes.

Back for another twig.

And away again to the next tree!
And back to find another twig.
Meantime, the other bird arrived, and sat on a nearby tree, moving only to look in another direction.

It's fascinating to observe other creatures being persistent and creative, in problem-solving.
That bird was working very hard to build a perfect nest!
This made me smile! Such clear photos and the one of the builder in flight is wonderful!
Thanks, Val -- it was great fun to watch!
Janet!!!! That in flight shot was fantastic!!!!
Thanks, Frank!
Beautiful sciences lesson/
Thanks, Michel -- it was fun to watch it unfold!
Great shots, but my favorite is the one in flight.
Thanks, Doris -- that's my favorite, too!
Blue herons are certainly beautiful birds. I really like the picture of the one taking flight with the twig in its mouth.
Thanks, Dan -- I think that shot is one of my all-time faves! They are most elegant birds!
Not sure how I missed this post. I love the shot of the heron looking over the nest and his perch, as if he is guarding the home, which I am sure he was. Beautiful as always.
When there were lots of herons there, I thought perhaps he was acting as a guide to the home colony -- you may be right, though, that he is guarding the home! It's appearing that the herons have found another place to nest this year -- I've only seen a couple of birds there so far.
Fabulous photos.
Thanks, Barbara -- I'm hopeful that I'll be able to see the birds again soon!
