  • Dana Point, 5/10/15

On Sunday afternoon, I finally felt strong enough to take a quick drive to Dana Point Harbor to see if the great blue herons had decided to return.  I did see one heron, but not in a position where I could photograph it.  I'm afraid that they've moved on for the season, and I won't be able to see them grow as I have in past years.

The breakwater was also not a perch for many birds as it has been in years past.  I did see a flock of pelicans fly by.

One of the tall ships belonging to the Ocean Institute had been out on a Mother's Day cruise and was returning to the harbor.

  • so sad about the birds. The ship looks like it is packed full! It does look majestic - and I can imagine it is even more impressive with full sails!

    • A friend who knows of another spot where there are herons tells me his birds came back this year. I'm thinking the trees were trimmed or something that compromised the nests! The ship was so full of people it must have been too crowded! They usually take the sails down before coming into the channel -- it's harder to catch it with sails up!

  • Pelicans, blue heron and a beautiful sailboat ; you live in Wionderland ,Janet

  • I sure do wonder where the herons went ~ so happy to see they got your subscription up and going, though!

    • My subscription has been ok -- it's me that's been under the weather for the last 2 weeks! I'm finally feeling human again, though I probably have a couple more weeks of recuperation before I'm really well again! This has been a very nasty bug!

I think the herons have found another source of food, perhaps at an inland lake, or perhaps along the coast -- I'll just have to go exploring!

  • That is disconcerting news. On the bright side, it does lead to a series of new birding haunts.

I hope your recovery is speedier than you currently expect.

    • I think I have some good exploring to do, once I feel strong enough to do it! I'll give myself 2 weeks!

  • @slmret: Get well soon!

  • You are such a pro, Janet.

Love your photos. What a thrill it would have been to sail one of those old ships.

    • Thank you, Frank! I think it would have been fun to sail a tall ship, but not with a Mother's Day crowd!

  • That looks like a crowd of people. Wouldn't it be a nightmare if they all got sea sick!? Hope you continue to get better.

    • Thanks -- I feel a little better each day! I thought that was a pretty stifling crowd of people on the tall ship!

  • I wonder if the birds know something.... the drought, the absence of greenery and I think they may be wanting the rain just as much as the humans. I hope they return.

    • I expect the herons will be found in some other location where there are tall trees and a lake or marsh -- I'll just have to find them.
