  • Sunset -- July 3, 2015

As I was reading emails this evening, I looked up to see the beginnings of a pretty sunset -- I grabbed the camera and went outside to see how it progressed.  Over the next five or so minutes, this is what I saw.  It seems that some of the humidity we've had over the past few days is beginning to move eastward, and this was the back side of that cloud.

It's still warm, and still somewhat humid, but nowhere nearly as bad as it has been.  It's fire season now, though, and there are spot fires all over the place.  Today there was a 30-acre fire in Laguna Canyon, about two miles from here as the crow flies.   I was able to see smoke, but there are hills between me and where the flames were, and the wind was going in a different direction.  I just heard that this fire was started by a tree falling on wires, which further caused 5 trees to fall.  It was located very close to the Festival Grounds -- today was opening day of the summer festivals!  It's going to be a long summer, but thus far the only fire that's grown to a huge size has been in wilderness area.

  • Fires are always a bother, especially when so close to an important economic venue. I hope it is contained and put out, post haste!

    • I believe the fire's been doused, though they'll keep watch on it overnight to make sure! It closed down the canyon road and several cross streets all afternoon and evening, though!

  • Beautiful!

  • Gorgeous!!! Thanks.

  • Beautiful sunset but I'd rather you had storm clouds to wet everything down and reduce the wildfire risks!

    • Me too, but a little humidity and a few clouds leaving the area are the most we can hope for right now! The humidity actually helps the firefighters too, as hot as it feels!

  • The sunset looks so grand. I wonder if the fires could have been somewhat responsible for the colors in the sky. Glad the humidity is wearing off. We have had some really good days so far.. three days in a row!

    • I think the Big Bear (Lake) fire may have helped the colors, but I've taken photos of other sunsets with no fires with just as brilliant colors. Last night's fire was in the opposite direction, and too small to have much effect. It's a bit less humid today, and cooler too, so much more comfortable!

  • I love sunsets, sunrises and your photography!!

  • @slmret: The fires are always such a nuisance. Stay safe!

    • Thanks -- so far the fires have mostly been just spot fires, and the firemen seem to be on top of them very quickly. I think I'm in a pretty safe place, though last night's was a bit scary!

  • Beautiful sunset pictures! Mary Hurlbut posted about the fire on FB. She had a picture of a plane dropping fire retardant (or whatever it is) on the fire.

    • Thank you! Yes, Mary would have been very close to the fire. The plane would have dropping fire retardant (we used to call them 'borate bombers') -- and helicopters generally drop water, which they can pick up from the sea, or from lakes.

  • So very, very lovely!!
