  • Sailboat Race -- Santa Barbara

    While I was in Santa Barbara, we went on short walks along Shoreline Drive, at the top of the cliffs over the ocean.  One afternoon we were there just as sailboats were gathering for a race outside the harbor.  These were probably about 15-foot boats, and a beginning class of sailors, and the power boats were probably there to monitor the group and make sure they all made it around the markers as well as to make sure they were all safe.  The structures on the horizon are oil drilling rigs -- there are 11 of them offshore, and they are very visible on nice days.

    And around the marker they go.  This is often the point at which the race is won or lost!

    It was beautiful weather while I was there -- not too hot, but no appreciable clouds except for the two evening sunsets.  We have since had about 1/3 inch of rain a couple of days ago, and it could be a triple-digit heat wave tomorrow!

  • The boats looks so small against the vast blue of the water (which amazes me with the sheer size and vibrant color)! I hope that heat doesn't evaporate all the rain plus!

    • We were actually quite a distance from the boats, plus above them. I think there was just enough rain that some of it may have soaked in. There was water on the roads for most of the morning, which meant that any on bare ground (or lawns, flower beds, etc.) wouldn't have evaporated too quickly. And then today wasn't so hot, so there was a little time before the heat sets in tomorrow morning. But they said there isn't any rain in the near future.

  • Glad you had a little bit of rain. The ocean is such a beautiful color! I think that's why blue is my favorite color, because I grew up near the ocean.

    • We had abaout 1/3 inch of rain at home, and about 1/4 in Santa Barbara -- followed by Santana wind conditions and triple digit heat! I am hopeful that it will cool down a bit tomorrow or Saturday, but we don't expect more rain any time soon!

  • Such striking blues and whites ~ summer colors for sure ~

    • It was probably still in the 80's that day -- it was a wonderful week! And I always enjoy watching sailing races -- spotted this one, and quickly found a parking spot!
