  • Boom!

This morning at 5:30 am, I was awakened by a tremendous BOOM!  As I wondered what woke me, I saw through the blinds a flash of light, followed by another, smaller boom.  That was the beginning of a half hour thunderstorm.  We normally see perhaps one thunderstorm a year in this area, and they're never very close -- usually against the mountains.  Last night, though, the storm sat right above my house, making lots of noise to announce its arrival.  Towards the end, there was a heavy rain that lasted about as long as it takes to type 'thunderstorm.'   This was repeated at about noon, and again in the evening.  It probably didn't bring much measurable rain, the it added to yesterday afternoon's rain and signalled that we may have more early rain than we have had for a while.   During the afternoon, I took the camera out to see what the clouds looked like -- these are all scenes that I've photographed without the clouds.

As I drove back, I discovered that the cows have invaded Dana Point!  There were several painted cows planted in strategic locations -- this was the only one that I could photograph this trip, but perhaps they'll stay long enough for me to get out and find more.

This reminded me of the elephants that were all over Dana Point a couple of years ago -- they were school art projects designed to raise funds to help the elephants.  I've seen nothing about this project -- but it struck me that there are actually two animals on this one -- first the cow itself, then the California bear!

  • Glad you got a little rain.

    • Thanks -- at this point small bursts of rain every few days are most helpful -- we'll have more in a couple of days.

  • The rain clouds look ominous. It seems to be the fad to have statuary painted by various artists and then to scatter them around town. The last time I drove through Wabash IN they had elephants everywhere. Purdue did a fundraiser asking for people to paint dog statues. I forget where exactly on our travels but it must have been in South Dakota that one town had bison statues all decked out in various paint jobs... I'd be interested to see what they've come up with for the cows!

  • It must be a relief to have rain clouds in sight and rain. Hope California can catch up on rain and not dry up and blow away.

    • It will take several years to catch up on rain, but Monday's storm and one coming on Friday should be a huge help! They are expecting that we will have an inch on Friday -- that's more than we've had in one day for a looong time!

  • Glad you got rain! I enjoy thunderstorms, but the lightning is a bit scary sometimes ~

    • I could only see the lightning as flashes of light in the dark -- but the thunder sat right overhead, and it was pretty scary as it made the house shake!

  • We got 7/10" Whoohoo!!! And the thunderstorm was tremendous. I hope this bodes well for our rainy season.
I like the "California is bullish" figure. Oops, I just noticed it's a cow; not a bull.

    • Wow -- that's more than other parts of the area that I've heard about -- that's great!!! The thunder shook the house, but I think we got about 1/4". The cow was apparently part of a larger display of cattle all around Dana Point.
