  • It's Springtime

For the last couple of months, I have been asking the Homeowners Board to consider replacing a hedge that runs between my front walk and my neighbor's, as they had left it when they replaced most of the others in the neighborhood.  The hedge in question has been getting pretty ratty looking, and some of that has been covered up by spreading ivy up the stems of the hedge!

In contrast, this is a hedge across the street that remains in place -- it is full and looks like a hedge.

Finally this week, the  hedge has been cut down and replaced with plants that will grow into a hedge with low-level plants along the edge of the walkways.

I am hopeful that this will help the community maintain its cared-for appearance!

Meantime, the hydrangeas inside my fence are really doing well this spring, thanks only to the rain.  There are lots of buds, and the first flower is in bloom.  This is the view from my front door.

  • Beautiful Hydrangeas. If you add a little vinegar mixed with water to the soil, the flowers will bloom blue and purple.
I am glad the homeowners association took care of the hedge, Janet. Hope you are doing well.

    • Thanks, Zakiah -- they amaze me, because I haven't watered them for at least a year -- the only water they have had in that time that I know of is from the rain we had last month! I will try adding some vinegar to their water as we go through this spring. I'm so glad they renovated the hedge -- it will look much better!

  • Fresh hedges and flowers certainly add beauty to your area.

    • The Association is upgrading all the landscaping -- it's beginning to look very pretty again!

  • The new plantings are looking great - your hydrangeas are so pretty. Our hydrangea plants are just beginning to get leaves -- they won't bloom until later this summer!

    • The hydrangeas thrive on neglect! Each winter they look like twigs, and then they come back to these gorgeous plants!

  • I've been considering getting some hydrangeas but the wicked walnut trees won't let them thrive! Your new hedge plants will no doubt create a nice effect! So glad they finally replaced the old hedge!

    • These hydrangeas look wonderful for about half the year -- they are coming into bloom right now, the flowers will last about a month or 6 weeks, then the leaves will last until the end of summer. During the winter they are twiggy and just sticks. These thrive on neglect except what they glean from rains and mist. They amaze me every year when they get to this point and look so beautiful!

  • Love the hydrangeas. For some reason they never grow well for us. I think we planted them in the wrong places?

    • I truly didn't expect these to thrive as they have! In winter they look like dead sticks, but they seem to come back every summer!

  • I love hydrangeas ~ and the new hedge plantings look like they will be great!

    • I think the hedge will be much better than what we have had -- that old hedge was looking pretty ratty!

  • My mother has a green thumb. I do not. But I love the flowers that come back every year naturally!

    • I, also, do not have a green thumb. These plants have thrived on neglect for some time, and this year seems to be one of their best!!

  • Hello. I hope you had a pleasant Mother's Day weekend.

    • Thank you, Crystalline -- I was away for 10 days around that weekend, but that was fine because I have no children. I'll be posting about my trip over the next week or so, in several posts. I do hope your Mothers Day was nice!
