  • Not a Cloud ~ ~ ~

For the last few days, we have had beautiful weather.  It's been hot, but a dry heat, with wind coming from the desert -- a typical Santana Wind condition.  There have been no clouds in the sky, although yesterday I could not see any mountains due to the dust in the air.  This afternoon I was doing errands and noticed something ominous.  Compare this typical view with not a cloud in the sky

with the next two, in which there is a nasty cloud spreading from east to west.

I tuned in to radio news, and learned that there is a brush fire on the northern part of Camp Pendleton NCAS.  Ironically, the base had cancelled the annual air show this weekend, not because of fire danger, but because of the government shutdown, so there were not public visitors on base as there might have been!  Proceeding to the Harbor, I noticed that the fire seemed to be growing.

Meantime, the smoke cloud continued to grow and to blow out to sea.

I thought there might be a spectacular sunset -- there sometimes is when there's a fire, but I think the smoke had not travelled far enough to the west.  This is what I saw as the sun went down.IMGP7739-001

  • Yet it's nice to see a sloop as the sun goes down.

I heard today about the brush fire on the base. The number of fires over the past several months...crazy.

    • This could be a big one, with high winds and heat, and low humidity. And the base is huge, with a lot of grassland and brush. They've evacuated 250 homes and a base hospital. So far this week we've been lucky -- this is the only major fire. The ones that affect civilian areas and homes have been stopped quickly so far -- one more day of this weather!

  • It has been hot and windy last two days. Must be santa ana, high potential for fires.

  • It does look ominous. Looking at the water between you and the fire is a good thing! :-)

  • wild fires are nasty. The sunset shot is amazing though!

  • so many fires! But the sunset is amazing ~ stay safe!

    • We have had a lot of fires this year -- this is a scary time because of the intense winds we are having!

  • Janet!!!! You area the guru of photographing nature. Loved your photos a love sunsets----especially off Waikiki beach.

    Have a great Sunday.

  • wow the sky is on fire

  • Wow. Great photos of the increasing clouds!

    • Thanks -- I don't like seeing clouds like this -- but it's a good example of what brushfires are like!

  • I'd heard of the fire yesterday and thought "Oh no! Not another fire!" However, it's bound to happen and hopefully all the fighters are ready, willing and able. And the smoke still contributed to creating a pretty sunset. I so wish I was there.

    • Yes, another fire -- but on the base they have people and resources to fight it, and lots of room for it to burn without hurting anything.

  • I hope they get this fire under control quickly!

    • Thanks! The Pendleton fire seems to be a tough one -- they struggled today to keep it inside the base! But the people who were evacuated are now home, and the hospital open again. There was another one in the hills behind me (about 10 miles behind where I live) -- started in a large mulch pile at a nursery! It's been very windy for the last few days (gusts to 90 mph!), but that should settle down overnight, and we may get some cooler weather.

  • Cali has a lot of fires, I hope that they can manage this one.

    • We do -- and they seem to be doing better at controlling them this year, at least in Southern Cal. The one on Pendleton seems to be still burning, and still dangerous, but the weather should change overnight, which will help!

  • You guys have had more than your share of fires this year. We've been lucky so far, only small ones around here.

    • Most of OUR fires have been pretty small, luckily. The bad ones have been farther north. Pendleton is now about 1500 acres, and Santiago Canyon about 100 (after burning all day). Hopefully the weather will change overnight and provide a little help!

  • How many destructions you have with those fires in California .
The lagunage looks clean and efficient.
    Love

    • We're almost through with this set of winds -- and have only had spotfires this time except for the one on the marine base! The water in this lake has been through a purification plant upstream, and is actually clean water.

  • That last photo is stunning!
The fires are scary. But it's interesting how the smoke in the air can make the sunset more beautiful.
    HUGS!!! :-)

    • Thanks, Carolyn -- yes, it is a scary time each fall, but the most beautiful sunset ever was one generated by the smoke from brushfires! (((hugs)))
