  • Sunset 12/3/13

While I have not been as regular with posting, I do try to get out with the camera.  Last Tuesday, there was a lovely sunset that I caught from the channel at Dana Point Harbor.

And while that was happening, this is what it looked like through the rear view mirror of the car.   A wise photographer once told me that he never shoots sunset toward the sun, but always in the opposite direction!

  • Your sunset pictures are so awe-inspiring! I love the one with the tree; it looks like the tree is bowing in prayer to the Creator of the beautiful skies and of itself
I also hadn't really ever heard or thought even of doing what you said that you learned from that photographer. Thanks for sharing the advice.
Have a wonderful weekend. ~ Carolyn

    • Thanks -- when I thought about looking at the sunset from the opposite side it made sense, since the light reflects off that side!

  • Great photos! I even like the reverse - reflected sunset shots! Makes me want to give the sunset a try!

    • The sunsets here have been lovely as storms go through -- you have to catch them just as the sun goes down, and then, if the clouds are just right, they fire up again about 15 minutes later on the opposite side of the sky!

  • as usual pretty photos.

  • I love these photos. You cannot beat a sunset or sunrise. Very beautiful.

  • Pretty.
I will try that next time I try to shoot a sunset. Does that work for a sunrise too?

    • I don't know about sunrises -- it probably does work. The trick is that the color is most brilliant towards the sun just as it goes down, and then on the opposite side about 10-15 minutes later, and only if the clouds are just right!

  • Gorgeous photos, Janet! I always look forward to the sunrises AND the sunsets! They are like a gift each day!
    Cool advice on photographing them!
(((HUGS)))and hope you are staying warm! :-)

    • Hahaha -- I seldom see sunrises! Glad you like these sunset shots, though!
Warmth is relative -- I'm very comfortable, but I'm inside where I can control the heat, and the outside temp hasn't gone below 40 or so here. I hope you can do the same -- and I hope you're feeling better!

  • So beautiful! Thanks for posting!!

  • I think the world would be a better place if more of us took the time to enjoy a sunrise and sunsetting.

    • Sunsets (and I expect sunrises too) certainly tend to settle the day into a calmer evening.

  • These are beautiful Pictures WOW

  • Awessome. Glorious shots indeed Janet. I have taken some pictures from my rear view screen in the car, and they turned out quite good I think.

    • Haha -- this is the first time I've had rear view mirror shots come out at all! It was a beautiful sunset!

  • Wow! Really beautiful! Every now and then I beg my husband to take me to the fjord so I can photograph the sunset. One of the few times he agreed, the fog rolled in just as the sun was going down! So disappointing! Your pics are gorgeous!

  • Beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing all the beauty that you photograph.

  • I love the sunset photos! So beautiful. peace always

  • well done!!!!

  • Awesome photos of an awe-inspiring sunset!

    • It was really a beautiful sunset, and there have been several like that over the last couple of weeks!

  • Such great contrasts in the 'front' and 'rear' pictures. Lovely.

  • I absolutely love sunsets! These are all excellent photos!

  • I've become a real fan of the rear view mirror shots...of course all of your photography is outstanding!

    • Thank you -- this is the first real success I've had with mirror shots, but I had plenty of time this time! I was amazed at the difference in color between the sun side and the opposite side!

  • lovely, lovely, LOVELY!!!

  • The last one is a nice touch.

  • It's great that you take your camera out regularly. Sometimes I forget how to set something or how to do something with my camera because I haven't used it regularly. It's so frustrating.

    • I do the same thing -- couldn't remember how to switch from manual to auto focus the other day! So embarrassing!
