  • Tall Ships

Well -- I lied!  In my post about the tall ship entering Dana Point Harbor for the Tall Ship Festival over this past weekend, I said I would not go to see the tall ships.  This afaternoon, I needed to get out of the house, and headed for the beach -- my car almost automatically heads for Dana Point when I go to the beach.  It occurred to me that, at 5 pm, the Festival would be over, and most of the people would have left.  That was true, except that on their way to their home ports, the tall ships stopped for a reenactment of a naval battle.  From the top of the bluff, I was able to find parking, and to see this reenactment.  I'll show them in the order I took them.

For each puff of smoke, 5 seconds or so later there was a large 'boom.'

  • Cool tall ships!

  • Spectacular photos! They look so majestic on the water :-) . peace always

  • Pretty cool pics, like pirate ship days.

    • Gah -- I can't respond to 3 people in the same reply! Yes -- like pirate ship days -- boom, boom!

  • Great photos. I'd go nuts with all those sails. 2 are all I can handle!

    • It looks to me as if they have much more flexibility with the wind, with all those sails. But I have no idea how they are/should be set.

  • It looks like they can catch the wind from any direction but perhaps there's a downside in bulkiness and lack of efficiency per sq foot.

I almost bought a sloop and planned on docking it at a pier called "Lou's Pier" but then I heard Lou's slips sink ships and decided against it!

    • Looks like they can catch wind with foresails (on the red boat and one other, there are 3 of those), and direct it back to the other sails, set the opposite direction. I don't think they'd race well -- too many sails to adjust! I'm glad you didn't buy a sloop just to sink it!

  • Well you didn't lie on purpose. :-) Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a little sailing time but I get seasick so I guess I'll 'sail' with my land legs.

  • I'm glad you lied. I enjoyed the pictures.

  • What a wonderful thing to witness ~

  • This is that moment where I'd apply the xanga mini for pirates. :)

    Great pics!

  • That's just GORGEOUS!

Good to read you again, Lady!

  • A great event to see! My daughter used to do Revolutionary War re-enacting, and enjoyed it so much. I bet the people on the ships were having a great time. It's always better when the cannons don't kill and you already know the outcome.

  • You always take such gorgeous photos, Jan. They are stunning. :-)

    • Thanks, Cyn -- There was so much haze in the air that these took some extra editing. It was fun to watch the Tall Ships under sail, though!

  • That is so neat!! Thanks for sharing these with us. :)

  • I loved these pics. Such a feeling of freedom.

    • It was fun watching the tall ships under sail, and then firing salvos at each other!

  • So very cool! Serendipity at work!!

    • Very much so! It was wonderful fun watching these guys, under sail, shooting canons sort of towards each other!

  • Janet those pictures are beautiful! Consider yourself Rec'd, Mini'd, approved and moderated. Wonderful pictures!!

    • Thanks for the rec, mini, approval, and moderation!!! It was so hazy that these really didn't come out as crisply as I would like, but it was fun to watch the battle!

  • I like the dingier sails. Reminds me of the old tyme ships.

  • Beautiful!

  • those are amazing!! we had some pass through up here as well... quite magnificent! i would have loved to live in olden days and travel on one across the ocean! :) )

  • Wow, Janet!!! What amazing photos!!1 I loved this. The ships are beautiful.

Hope your week is going well.

  • My husband and I sailed on a WindJammer Cruise, all tall ships, back in the day, it was like camping on a boat, we helped raise sails and swab decks, it was so much fun...thanks for the memories Janet. Are you anywhere near the America's Cup Races?

    • That sounds wonderful! No -- I'm about 500 miles from San Francisco, where the America's Cup Races are being held. Those things don't look like boats, though -- not like the America's Cup we used to see!

  • Beautiful and elegant sail ships . They look like sea birds
    Always the good photos,janet
    Love

  • Well, I tried the copy and paste and got a tiny pic...so that's an improvement. :) Your ships are beauteous!!!

  • Wow! I love seeing the sails! So beautiful!
And to see and hear the reenactment must of been amazing!
    HUGS!!! :-)
PS...It poured rain ALL day today and it's still raining now!

  • Incredibly vibrant photos Janet. You are such a master at this.

  • Oh you got such great photos! I wanted to see the ships under sail like that, but just looked down in the afternoon and saw them at anchor. I will live vicariously through you :-)

  • I wish I could rec this. :-D

  • Please ,Janet, could you tell me if you can reach ZSA_MD' xanga site?
For me it has suddenly disappeared . Weird!
    Love
    Michel
